About the Work
POTS:
The clay is a low fire terra cotta body first bisque fired to
cone 04 (about 1940 degree F) and then glaze fired to cone 05
(1890 F). After the bisque fire, majolica glaze, a white opaque
tin-based glaze, is applied to the pots and then the color is
painted on top of that.
The forms include bowls and platters of various sizes, mugs, tumblers,
pitchers, tea pots, vases, salt and pepper sets, creamer and sugar
sets, and many more.
The mixing of bright colored glazes and coupling of simple geometric
shapes create very playful works of art that invite the owner
to use them on a daily basis.
This pottery is all lead-free and food safe.
The pottery is dishwasher safe, although over time colors may
fade a bit. You can microwave these pots in moderation. These
are not oven safe. However, if you want to just warm plates in
the oven make sure to heat the pottery and the over together.
Putting a cold plate into a hot oven may result in a cracked plate.
WALLWORK:
Using a raku clay body, these slab forms are constructed in a
loose, organic manner. This raku clay body is bique-fired to 06
(1815 F) and then glazed and fired again in a raku kiln lined
with fiberglass. The pieces are taken out with tongs when they
are red-hot and placed into a garbage can filled with saw-dust
and newspaper which immediately catches fire. The lid is then
tightly closed to give a good reduction atmosphere where the carbon
from the paper gets trapped into the clay body as well as cracks
in the glaze creating black lines.
Luisa's wall art pieces are simple in form but very complex in
color and meant to invoke sentiments of nature. She is drawn to
the unpredictability and unusual results associated with the raku-firing
process which guarantees a unique piece of work.
